Greenhouse Benches and Seedbeds
Benches and seedbeds lift plants off the floor and organize propagation and potted crops. The choice is between fixed and mobile layouts, and it depends on how you handle plants. FANGCHENG supplies benches and seedbeds with the greenhouse.
Why use benches
Fixed or rolling benches
Fixed benches need an aisle between every row. Mobile benches slide sideways so one aisle can be opened wherever you need it.

Simple and stable.
Moves sideways on tracks, so one aisle serves several benches.
An aisle between every row.
One aisle, opened wherever you need it.
Propagation rooms, tray placement and research areas.
Crowded production, where floor space is used better.
The lowest cost.
Adds track and handling cost, so it pays off where plants are moved often.

Seedbeds
Seedbeds hold trays for sowing and early growth. They can be fixed or mobile, and some are ebb-and-flow, which waters from below.
Fixed, mobile or ebb-and-flowBench surfaces and how ebb-and-flow works
Bench tops are usually open mesh or slotted so water drains and air moves. Ebb-and-flow benches use a sealed tray that floods and drains instead. The surface should match your container type and your watering method.

Pump floods the bench
A pump floods the bench with nutrient solution to a set level.

Solution soaks up
The solution soaks up into the substrate from below.

Drains back
It then drains back to a tank.

Leaves stay dry
Leaves stay dry and water is reused, but the system needs filtration and care to stop disease spreading.
What to choose from
- Crop and container: trays, pots or bags
- Handling: by hand, by cart or mechanized
- Bench height that is comfortable for seeding, transplanting and harvest
- Water: overhead, drip or ebb-and-flow
- Greenhouse width and aisle layout
Works with
- Irrigation, including sub-irrigation
- Heating at bench level
- Lighting and shading
- Nursery and seedling greenhouses
Bench materials and finishes
Benches are commonly made of steel, aluminum or plastic, with mesh or slotted tops. Corrosion protection matters in a wet, humid building, so ask what finish is used and whether it suits your water and fertilizer.
Finish matters in a wet houseLayout planning

Bench width and length against house span
- 02
Aisle width for carts and people
- 03

Matching benches to watering
Overhead.
Open mesh benches that drain.
Drip.
Pots on mesh benches, with drip stakes.
Ebb and flow.
Sealed tray benches with a tank and pump.
Moving plants
Plants move through the house
Think about how plants move through the greenhouse: from sowing to growing on to packing. Benches and aisles that suit that flow save labor. Mobile benches are useful where plants are moved often.
Choosing between fixed, rolling and ebb-and-flow

Choose fixed benches when
plants stay in place for the whole cycle, space is not tight and you want the lowest cost.

Choose rolling benches when
floor space is valuable and plants are moved often.

Choose ebb-and-flow when
you grow in trays or pots, want even watering from below and can manage sanitation well.
What we need from you
- Crop, container type and size
- Greenhouse width and length
- Watering method
- How plants are moved and by whom
- Whether bench-level heating is wanted
Common bench mistakes
Benches too wide to reach the middle
Surfaces that do not drain
Bench height that is uncomfortable for the work
Not matching the bench to the container
Ignoring the load of wet trays and pots
Common questions
Straight answers. If yours is not here, ask us.
They suit crowded production and frequent handling. For small or simple setups, fixed benches may be enough.
Yes. Ebb-and-flow benches are available. Tell us your crop.
Tell us your layout and we confirm which benches and seedbeds we supply for it.
Wide enough to reach the middle comfortably from one side, or from both sides if access is on both. We confirm it with your handling method.
Yes. Bench-level heating can warm the root zone. Tell us your crop.
Many propagators do, because it waters evenly from below. It needs good sanitation.
Benches are designed for a stated load. Tell us your pot size, substrate and watering so we confirm the load.
Choose surfaces that drain and wipe or wash between batches.
